Description
A 37-day controlled CO2 release experiment conducted from May 2012 to May 2013 monitored changes in shallow marine sediments, pore waters, and the overlying water column. The dataset, collected by the National Oceanography Centre, includes measurements of physical properties, elemental composition, carbon content, and water chemistry parameters. It was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Scottish Government under the QICS program.
Use Cases
Modeling the impact of CO2 leakage on marine sediment chemistry based on monitored changes in pore water composition.
Assessing the environmental risks of subseafloor carbon storage based on field-scale experimental data on the water column.
Analyzing temporal changes in benthic ecosystems based on data collected before, during, and after a controlled CO2 release.
Studying the carbonate system's response to CO2 intrusion based on total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon measurements.
Strengths
Data originates from a controlled, field-scale experiment providing real-world validation.
Monitoring occurred over a year-long period, including pre-release, 37-day release, and post-release phases.
Covers multiple sample types: solid phase sediments, pore waters, and the overlying water column.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data freshness should be verified as the last metadata update is dated 2026-05-28.
