Description
A chronology constructed from U/Th, TL, AMS 14C, and amino acid racemization dating indicates dune units and paleosols were emplaced during oxygen isotope stage 7 and earlier in the Middle Pleistocene, with younger beach and dune units deposited during OIS 5e and OIS 5a. The dataset describes the lithostratigraphy of skeletal carbonate eolianite and beach calcarenite on Lord Howe Island, divisible into the Searles Point and Neds Beach Formations. It was published via the Australian Ocean Data Network and last updated in May 2026.
Use Cases
Reconstructing paleoclimate and sea-level changes based on the record of up to 7 discrete phases of carbonate deposition.
Analyzing coastal sediment transport and dune formation based on descriptions of transverse and climbing dunes with a seaward sediment source.
Studying diagenetic processes in carbonate rocks based on features like pore-filling sparite, microsparite, and recrystallised grains.
Modeling karst landscape evolution based on documented features such as dolines, caves, and relict speleothems.
Correlating regional stratigraphic sequences based on the constructed chronology using multiple dating techniques.
Strengths
The description provides a detailed geological context, including two distinct formations (Searles Point and Neds Beach) with specific lithological and cementation characteristics.
A multi-method chronology is constructed using U/Th ages of speleothems and corals, TL ages, AMS 14C, and amino acid racemization dating.
The data covers a significant temporal range, from the Middle Pleistocene (OIS 7 and earlier) through to the Late Pleistocene (OIS 5e and 5a).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The primary file format is HTML, which may not be structured for direct analysis.
