The RAFT synthetic tropical cyclone dataset was generated by Karthik Balaguru of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for a 2022 Science Advances paper on increased US coastal hurricane risk under climate change. It contains 50,000 synthetic storms per file for historical (1980-2014) and future (2066-2100) periods under the SSP585 scenario from a CMIP6 global climate model. Variables include storm latitude, longitude, year, Julian day, and maximum surface wind speed.
Data files are in .mat format, requiring tools like scipy.io.loadmat in Python to read. The authors note a separate bias-corrected version for localized impact assessment is planned.
