Description
Data from the CDC's COVID Data Tracker provides weekly rates of COVID-19 cases and deaths, segmented by age group and vaccination status. The dataset includes columns for crude and age-adjusted incidence rates (IR) and incidence rate ratios (IRR) for unvaccinated, primary-series-only, and boosted populations. It was posted in October 2022, archived in November 2022, and revised in February 2023, covering cases through September 24, 2022, and deaths through September 3, 2022.
Use Cases
Calculate vaccine effectiveness by comparing age_adj_vax_ir and age_adj_unvax_ir across different age_group categories.
Analyze temporal trends in case outcomes by plotting outcome counts against mmwr_week for boosted and unvaccinated populations.
Assess the impact of booster doses on severe outcomes by analyzing crude_booster_irr and age_adj_booster_irr stratified by age_group.
Strengths
Includes both crude and age-adjusted incidence rates and ratios, allowing for demographic control in analyses.
Provides detailed breakdowns by vaccination status (unvaccinated, primary_series_only, boosted) and age_group.
Data is sourced from the authoritative data.cdc.gov platform and was revised in February 2023.
Limitations
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
Data may reflect temporal bias, as it covers a specific period of the pandemic (through September 2022).
Description metadata notes that booster doses in immunocompromised persons cannot be distinguished, which is a relevant consideration for analysis.
