Description
Over 3200 river, lake, and coastal monitoring sites across England provide water height measurements, typically every 15 minutes. The Environment Agency collects this data via telemetry, with update frequency increasing from once daily to several times per day during flood events. Readings are transferred to internal and external systems in, or close to, real time.
Use Cases
Flood risk modeling and early warning based on real-time water level measurements.
Hydrological research on river behavior using high-frequency, 15-minute interval data.
Environmental impact assessment of water management using data from 1400 gauging stations with flow measurements.
Operational monitoring of reservoirs and coastal sites using the network of 1800 level-only stations.
Strengths
Covers 3200 monitoring sites, including 1400 river gauging stations and 1800 level-only sites.
Provides high-frequency measurements, typically every 15 minutes.
Update frequency adapts to conditions, increasing to several times per day during floods.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to uk_data, focusing on England.
Freshness should be verified; last metadata update was 2026-07-06 07:16:40.317369.
