A synthesis of the hydrological impacts of China's Grain for Green Program, a major soil conservation policy, in a large erosion-prone dryland area. The work by Lulu Zhang from the Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources applies a combination of bottom-up and top-down approaches to review on-site and off-site water effects. It provides lessons-learned for global greening efforts in degraded arid environments.
