The Resident Assessment Instrument/Minimum Data Set (RAI/MDS) is a standardized clinical assessment process mandated for U.S. nursing homes participating in Medicare and Medicaid since 1990. It provides consistent data for monitoring resident status, measuring quality, and calculating resource utilization through 53 Resource Utilization Groups (RUG-IV). The Department of Veterans Affairs implements this system in its Community Living Centers, with data aggregated at the Austin Information Technology Center.
