Description
Geoscience Australia's National Petroleum Wells Database provides header data, biostratigraphy, organic geochemistry, reservoir and facies, stratigraphy, velocity, and directional surveys for offshore and onshore petroleum wells. The dataset has been retired and consolidated into the broader Geoscience Australia Borehole Database (BOREHOLE). Scientific data entry was primarily conducted for offshore wells, while onshore data was acquired from state geological surveys.
Use Cases
Analyze reservoir and facies data to model hydrocarbon potential in specific geological formations.
Correlate biostratigraphy and stratigraphy data across wells to map subsurface geological structures.
Utilize velocity and directional survey data for well trajectory planning and seismic interpretation.
Study organic geochemistry data to assess source rock quality and maturity.
Strengths
Covers both offshore and onshore regions of Australia.
Includes multiple scientific data themes such as biostratigraphy and geochemistry.
Limitations
Dataset is retired and superseded, indicating potential staleness or maintenance issues.
Scientific data entry was generally only conducted for offshore wells, creating a geographic bias.
Specific row counts, column details, and temporal coverage are unknown.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network and Geoscience Australia.
Collection Method
Data entry for offshore wells by scientific staff; onshore data acquired from state geological surveys.
