Description
RETIRED - This record has been superseded by eCat 126310 as advised by M. Webster 16 June 2023. The National Petroleum Wells Database provides header, biostratigraphy, organic geochemistry, reservoir, facies, stratigraphy, velocity, and directional survey data for petroleum wells. Scientific data entry is generally conducted for offshore wells, while onshore data is acquired from state geological surveys.
Use Cases
Analyze reservoir characteristics based on reservoir and facies data themes
Study stratigraphic sequences based on stratigraphy data
Model subsurface velocity profiles based on velocity and directional survey data
Assess hydrocarbon potential based on organic geochemistry data
Map well locations and attributes based on header data
Strengths
Includes data for both offshore and onshore regions
Contains multiple scientific data themes such as biostratigraphy and organic geochemistry
Managed by Geoscience Australia, a national scientific agency
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
The dataset is retired and superseded by another record (eCat 126310)
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network and Geoscience Australia
Collection Method
Scientific data entry for offshore wells and acquisition from state geological surveys for onshore wells
Geography
Australia, offshore and onshore regions
