Description
Geoscience Australia's retired petroleum wells database, now merged into the BOREHOLE system, contains header data, biostratigraphy, organic geochemistry, reservoir and facies, stratigraphy, velocity and directional surveys. Scientific data entry was generally conducted for offshore wells, while onshore data was acquired from state geological surveys. The record was superseded on 16 June 2023 and is accessible via the Geoscience Australia Portal.
Use Cases
Model petroleum reservoir characteristics based on reservoir and facies data.
Analyze geological timelines and formations based on stratigraphy and biostratigraphy data.
Study hydrocarbon source potential based on organic geochemistry data.
Plan well trajectories and analyze subsurface structures based on velocity and directional surveys.
Strengths
Covers multiple data themes including biostratigraphy, organic geochemistry, and stratigraphy.
Includes data for both offshore and onshore regions of Australia.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
The dataset is marked as retired and superseded by another record (eCat 126310).
