Ten Key Ecological Features (KEFs) were identified by the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts in Australia's northwest marine region to support marine bioregional planning. Seven of these features are located in the deep-sea, an area where biodiversity and ecosystem information is scarce. Geoscience Australia investigated the habitat heterogeneity of these KEFs using its expertise in habitat mapping and surrogacy.
