The Capel and Faust basins are located on the northern Lord Howe Rise between eastern Australia and New Caledonia. This dataset contains geological interpretations from high-quality 2D seismic, bathymetry, gravity, magnetic, and rock dredge data acquired by Geoscience Australia between 2003 and 2011. The analysis was presented at the Australian Earth Sciences Convention in July 2010.
Use Cases
- Model basin evolution based on interpreted syn-rift and post-rift megasequences.
- Assess petroleum prospectivity based on seismic data indicating basin fill thickness over 6 km.
- Map depocentre geometry based on seismic and gravity data showing structures approximately 150 km long and 40 km wide.
- Analyze sediment composition based on descriptions of volcanic, volcaniclastic, coaly, lacustrine, and marine deposits.
Strengths
- Includes high-quality 2D seismic data, multibeam bathymetry, gravity, magnetic data, and rock dredge samples.
- Basin fill thickness is indicated to exceed 6 km, with depocentres approximately 150 km long and 40 km wide.
- Data acquisition occurred under government programs (2003-2011), improving upon limited regional data from the 1970s-1990s.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Data is presented in PDF/HTML formats, which may require extraction for quantitative analysis.
