Description
NASA's GeneLab project provides transcriptomic, proteomic, and epigenomic data from mouse adrenal glands and other tissues harvested after the first Rodent Research spaceflight experiment. The investigation assessed the viability of RNA, DNA, and protein extracted from archived tissue samples stored for at least a year at -80°C after return from the International Space Station. This data aims to maximize science return from ISS biological experiments and is disseminated without restrictions.
Use Cases
Analyze spaceflight-induced transcriptomic changes in mouse adrenal glands based on the described RNA extraction protocols.
Investigate proteomic alterations in muscle tissues (e.g., quadriceps, soleus) from spaceflight subjects mentioned in the description.
Assess the feasibility of epigenomic assays on archived spaceflight biospecimens based on the investigation's stated objectives.
Prioritize future ISS rodent research activities based on the scientific value assessment of different tissue types described.
Strengths
Data originates from a controlled NASA spaceflight experiment (Rodent Research-1) on the International Space Station.
Includes a multi-omics approach (transcriptomic, proteomic, epigenomic) on multiple tissue types, including adrenal glands and seven muscle/organs.
Tissue samples were preserved using standardized methods (snap-frozen or RNAlater) and stored at -80°C.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and dataset scale are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data files are in a BIN format, which may require specialized tools for access and analysis.
