Description
NASA's Rodent Research-1 (RR1) Validation Flight dataset contains transcriptomic, proteomic, and epigenomic data from mouse quadriceps muscle tissue. The data was collected by NASA's GeneLab project from tissues harvested during the first RR spaceflight experiment, snap-frozen or preserved, and stored at -80°C for at least a year. The investigation assessed the viability of RNA, DNA, and protein extracted from archived RR-1 samples for multi-omics analysis.
Use Cases
Assessing spaceflight effects on muscle transcriptomics based on the RNA extraction protocols and results described.
Analyzing proteomic changes in microgravity based on the protein extraction feasibility study.
Investigating epigenetic adaptations to space environments based on the DNA extraction for epigenomic assays.
Prioritizing future ISS crew time for rodent research based on the scientific value assessment of tissue types.
Strengths
Data originates from a controlled NASA spaceflight experiment, the Rodent Research-1 mission.
Includes multiple omics data types (transcriptomic, proteomic, epigenomic) from the same biological samples.
Tissues were prioritized based on likelihood of significant scientific value for spaceflight research.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data files are in a BIN format, which may require specialized tools for access and analysis.
