34,378 Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) in England and Wales are classified into rural and urban categories. The classification was developed in 2004 by a consortium coordinated by Prof. John Shepherd from Birkbeck College, co-sponsored by UK government bodies including the Office for National Statistics and Defra. It provides a tool for analyzing datasets according to a morphology indicator (urban >10k, town and fringe, other rural) and a context indicator for sparsity.
Super Output Areas do not have all the same codes as the Output Area level dataset; classifications for 'Villages, Hamlets and Isolated Dwellings' have been combined for SOAs and Wards.
