A 2001 rural-urban classification for 7,194 Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs) in England and Wales. The dataset was developed in 2004 by a consortium coordinated by Prof. John Shepherd from Birkbeck College and co-sponsored by UK government agencies including the Office for National Statistics and Defra. It categorizes areas into three morphological domains and includes a sparsity context indicator.
The classification for Super Output Areas combines the 'Villages, Hamlets and Isolated Dwellings' categories from the Output Area level.
