Description
High-resolution Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) data was collected from the CEFAS research vessel RV Corystes in August 2003. The data broadly covers the European Shelf, with some measurements from the Iberian Abyssal Plain, collected using a lowered CTD rosette system while the vessel was stationary. Profiles from the surface to near the sea bed were undertaken, with the down cast providing a clean profile and water samples for calibration taken on the up cast.
Use Cases
Calculate ocean salinity based on conductivity measurements using UNESCO 1978/1983 formulations.
Analyze vertical water column profiles based on pressure (depth), temperature, and conductivity data.
Study potential phytoplankton distribution based on the mention of fluorometer sensors for chlorophyll fluorescence.
Investigate water clarity or suspended particulates based on the mention of optical backscatter or transmissometer sensors.
Strengths
Data was collected using a standardized lowered CTD rosette system, which is a core oceanographic method.
The description specifies the data includes primary oceanographic parameters: Pressure (Depth), Temperature, and Conductivity.
The geographic coverage is specified as the European Shelf and the Iberian Abyssal Plain.
Limitations
Row count and file size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics and the presence of additional sensors (e.g., fluorometers) must be inferred or verified after download.
The exact sensor configuration and data format vary between cruises, requiring inspection of the specific output files.
