Description
Research vessel data collected by CEFAS (or DFR) using a lowered CTD rosette system while the vessel was stationary. The data broadly cover the European Shelf and include profiles from the surface to near the sea bed, with water samples taken for calibration on the up cast. Early years likely contain core parameters like pressure, temperature, and conductivity, from which salinity can be derived.
Use Cases
Modeling water column stratification based on temperature and salinity profiles mentioned in the description
Calibrating satellite-derived sea surface salinity data using in-situ conductivity measurements
Studying spatial patterns of marine productivity using fluorometer or PAR (photosynthetically available radiation) sensor data
Analyzing sediment transport or water clarity using optical backscatter or transmissometer readings
Strengths
Data collected using a standardized lowered CTD rosette system, which typically provides high-quality downcast profiles
Includes calibration samples from water bottles fired at specific depths
Covers a broad geographic area including the European Shelf and the Iberian Abyssal Plain
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
The exact sensor configuration varies between cruises, affecting data format and available parameters
