Description
From November 30 to December 22, 2015, the RV Investigator collected continuous underway data during the Great Australian Bight Deep Water Pelagic and Benthic Ecosystem Study voyage between Port Lincoln and Fremantle. The dataset consists of three core data streams: navigation (GPS, speed, heading), thermosalinograph (water salinity, temperature, fluorescence, pCO2), and atmospheric measurements (wind, humidity, radiation, air temperature, trace gases). Data were recorded at 5-second intervals and are available in processed NetCDF and CSV formats.
Use Cases
Mapping oceanographic fronts and water mass properties based on thermosalinograph salinity and temperature data.
Analyzing air-sea gas exchange dynamics using concurrent atmospheric trace gas and water pCO2 measurements.
Reconstructing vessel track and environmental context for benthic sampling using navigation and meteorological data.
Studying phytoplankton biomass distribution via continuous fluorescence measurements.
Validating regional oceanographic and atmospheric models with high-frequency in-situ observations.
Strengths
High temporal resolution with data recorded at 5-second intervals.
Multi-faceted data collection covering navigation, water column, and atmospheric properties.
Processed and archived by a recognized authority (CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere Data Centre).
Limitations
Specific column names, row counts, and file sizes are not provided in the available metadata.
License and authorship details are unspecified.
The dataset's temporal coverage is limited to a single 23-day voyage in 2015.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN), collected via CSIRO Marine National Facility RV Investigator.
Collection Method
Continuously recorded underway shipboard sensors during voyage IN2015_C02.
Time Range
2015-11-30 to 2015-12-22
Freshness
Last updated metadata on 2026-06-27.
Geography
Great Australian Bight, from Port Lincoln, South Australia to Fremantle, Western Australia.
Data is available in multiple temporal aggregations (5-sec NetCDF, 10-sec CSV, 5-min CSV). A cruise report or data processing report contains additional contextual information.
