Description
122 GB of raw multibeam echosounder data and 193 GB of watercolumn data were collected during the RV Investigator's COOKIES voyage from January to February 2026. The data, stored in .kmall and .kmwcd formats, includes bathymetry and backscatter measurements corrected for motion, position, and tide using the EGM2008 model. It was collected by the Australian Ocean Data Network.
Use Cases
Map seafloor bathymetry based on processed multibeam echosounder data.
Analyze acoustic backscatter properties of the water column based on .kmwcd format data.
Study sediment distribution and ice ecosystem interactions based on data collected during the COOKIES voyage.
Model sound propagation in ocean environments based on applied sound velocity profiles.
Strengths
Data volume is substantial with 122 GB of raw bathymetry/backscatter data and 193 GB of watercolumn data.
Processing steps are documented, including motion correction, GPS tide application using EGM2008, and outlier removal.
The dataset includes 1226 files for both raw and watercolumn data streams.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data freshness should be verified; last updated 2026-06-27 19:49:40.431551.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network via data_gov_au.
Collection Method
Collected via an EM124 multibeam echosounder aboard the RV Investigator.
Time Range
January 02, 2026 to February 25, 2026.
Freshness
Data collected in early 2026, metadata last updated in June 2026.
Geography
Voyage departed from and returned to Hobart; likely covers Antarctic waters relevant to the 'Cook Ice Ecosystems and Sediments' mission.
Data is stored in proprietary .kmall and .kmwcd formats; specialized software may be required for access and analysis.
