Description
516 maps cover the entire continent of Australia at a scale of 1:250,000, the largest scale for full continental coverage. Each standard map sheet covers an area of approximately 1.5 degrees longitude by 1 degree latitude, showing natural and constructed features like roads, vegetation, and contours. The series is produced by Geoscience Australia and includes about 50 special maps covering non-standard areas.
Use Cases
Terrain analysis and modeling based on 50-meter contour intervals
Infrastructure planning and routing based on road and rail network data
Environmental and land cover studies based on vegetation and hydrography features
Creating regional base maps for other datasets based on administrative boundaries and localities
Strengths
Covers the entire continent of Australia with 516 map sheets
Provides topographic data at a consistent 1:250,000 scale
Includes both natural features (vegetation, hydrography) and constructed features (roads, rail)
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Data is provided in PDF format, which may require conversion for direct geospatial analysis
