Description
From 2006 to 2012, aerial imagery and ground surveys were used to develop this geospatial dataset. It maps ecological zones within saltmarsh habitats, including Pioneer, Spartina, Mid-low, Upper Marsh, and Reedbeds, for a selection of water bodies in England and Wales. The dataset is owned by the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales, but is now retired and superseded by 'Saltmarsh Extent & Zonation'.
Use Cases
Classifying saltmarsh ecological communities based on the defined zonation categories.
Assessing habitat extent and structure for environmental reporting based on the described zones.
Supporting Water Framework Directive compliance by mapping required saltmarsh zones.
Integrating zonation data with extents data for a complete habitat picture as suggested in the description.
Strengths
Data is derived from a combination of aerial imagery and ground survey methods.
Zonation reflects specific ecological communities required for a defined regulatory purpose (Water Framework Directive).
Covers a temporal range from 2006 to 2012.
Limitations
The dataset is retired and no longer updated, superseded by a newer product.
Coverage is not complete for all saltmarsh areas in England and Wales, only surveyed locations.
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
