Description
UNOSAT map FL20220808PAK illustrates cumulative satellite-detected water extents in Pakistan between 01 and 29 August 2022. The analysis covers approximately 793,000 km2, identifying about 75,000 km2 of lands affected by flood waters, including 48,530 km2 of flooded croplands. This preliminary analysis, produced by the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT), estimates at least 22 million people were potentially exposed to flooded areas.
Use Cases
Assessing flood impact on agricultural land based on the identified 48,530 km2 of flooded croplands.
Estimating population exposure to disasters based on the WorldPop data integration indicating 22 million potentially affected people.
Mapping cumulative flood water extents for a specific event period based on VIIRS satellite data between 01 and 29 August 2022.
Supporting preliminary field validation and ground feedback efforts for disaster response.
Strengths
Provides specific, quantified spatial extents: 75,000 km2 of affected land within a 793,000 km2 analysis area.
Includes detailed breakdown of impact types, specifically 48,530 km2 of flooded croplands.
Integrates population exposure estimates, indicating at least 22 million people were potentially affected.
Limitations
Preliminary analysis not validated in the field; accuracy requires ground verification.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data freshness should be verified; last metadata update was 2026-04-15.
