Description
Seabed classification products interpreted from bathymetry and backscatter data sourced from multibeam echosounders, side-scan sonars, and airborne laser bathymetry. The NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water created this dataset to provide baseline data for managing and researching NSW continental shelf environments. The dataset was last updated on March 17, 2026.
Use Cases
Map seabed landforms based on interpreted bathymetry data.
Identify substrate composition based on backscatter/reflectance data.
Validate seabed type interpretations using referenced towed underwater video.
Inform marine park management based on baseline seabed character data.
Support research on continental shelf environments based on fundamental seabed composition data.
Strengths
Products are validated, where available, with towed underwater video and sediment sampling data.
Data is sourced from multiple technologies including multibeam echosounders, side-scan sonars, and airborne laser bathymetry.
The dataset is intended to provide fundamental baseline data for ongoing management and research.
The license is CC-BY-4.0, allowing for open reuse.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The primary file format is PDF, which may not be ideal for direct computational analysis.
