Description
Spatially continuous data of seabed gravel content expressed as a weight percentage from 0 to 100%, presented in a 0.01 decimal degree resolution raster format. The dataset covers the Australian continental Exclusive Economic Zone, including the seabed surrounding Tasmania, and supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy. It was published by the Australian Ocean Data Network and last updated on 2026-04-28.
Use Cases
Modeling seabed habitat suitability based on sediment gravel percentage.
Regional environmental impact assessments based on continuous sediment fraction data.
Updating marine geological maps based on improved predictions of gravel content.
Planning offshore infrastructure projects based on seabed sediment properties.
Strengths
Supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy.
Provides continuous data at a 0.01 decimal degree resolution.
Covers the Australian continental EEZ, including Tasmania.
Limitations
Accuracy varies based on underlying data density and seabed complexity; artefacts occur in regions with insufficient samples.
May not be appropriate for local-scale use where sample density is insufficient to detect local variation.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Likely derived from seabed samples and spatial interpolation.
Time Range
2011
Freshness
Last updated 2026-04-28 15:40:04.490021; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Australian continental Exclusive Economic Zone, including seabed surrounding Tasmania. Excludes areas around Macquarie Island, Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Heard and McDonald Islands, and the Australian Antarctic Territory.
File formats are ZIP and HTML; the ZIP likely contains the raster data.
