Description
The Australian Ocean Data Network provides spatially continuous raster data on seabed sediment composition for the Browse region within the Australian continental Exclusive Economic Zone. The dataset supersedes previous predictions with improved accuracy, presenting gravel, mud, and sand content as weight percentages in 0.0025 decimal degree resolution grids. It is intended for basin-scale use, with accuracy varying based on underlying sample density and seabed complexity.
Use Cases
Modeling seabed habitat suitability based on sediment grain size fractions.
Planning offshore infrastructure projects based on basin-scale sediment distribution.
Conducting geological and environmental baseline studies for the Browse region.
Calibrating or validating broader marine sediment models using the updated predictions.
Strengths
Supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy.
Provides spatially continuous data at 0.0025 decimal degree resolution.
Covers the Browse region within the Australian continental EEZ.
Limitations
Contains artefacts due to insufficient samples in some regions.
May not be appropriate for use at smaller scales where sample density is low.
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
