Description
Australian Ocean Data Network provides spatially continuous raster data on seabed gravel, mud, and sand content, expressed as weight percentages, for the Petrel sub-basin within the Australian continental Exclusive Economic Zone. The dataset supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy and is presented in 0.0025 decimal degree resolution grids. It was last updated on 2026-04-16.
Use Cases
Modeling sediment distribution patterns based on gravel, mud, and sand weight percentages.
Assessing seabed complexity and habitat suitability based on continuous sediment fraction data.
Planning marine infrastructure projects based on basin-scale sediment property maps.
Validating and updating seabed sediment predictions based on the described interpolation method.
Strengths
Spatially continuous predictions at 0.0025 decimal degree resolution.
Supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy.
Covers the Petrel sub-basin within the Australian continental EEZ.
Limitations
Accuracy varies based on underlying data density and seabed complexity; artefacts occur in regions with insufficient samples.
Intended for basin-scale use and may not be appropriate for smaller-scale analysis in areas with low sample density.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Provenance
