Description
Spatially continuous data of seabed gravel, mud, and sand content expressed as a weight percentage ranging from 0 to 100% for the Petrel sub-basin in the Australian continental EEZ. The dataset is presented in 0.0025 decimal degree resolution raster grids and ASCII text file formats, superseding previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy. It was published by the Australian Ocean Data Network and last updated on 2026-04-10.
Use Cases
Modeling seabed sediment distribution based on gravel, mud, and sand weight percentages.
Conducting basin-scale geological assessments based on continuous spatial sediment data.
Updating or validating previous sediment predictions for the Petrel sub-basin.
Planning marine infrastructure projects based on seabed composition data.
Strengths
Provides continuous spatial data at a 0.0025 decimal degree resolution.
Supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy.
Covers a defined geographic area: the Petrel sub-basin in the Australian continental EEZ.
Limitations
Artefacts occur as a result of insufficient samples in relevant regions.
The dataset may not be appropriate for use at smaller scales where sample density is insufficient.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
