Description
Australian Ocean Data Network provides spatially continuous data of seabed gravel, mud, and sand content expressed as weight percentages. The dataset covers the Petrel sub-basin in the Australian continental EEZ in 0.0025 decimal degree resolution raster grids and ASCII text formats. It supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy, though artifacts occur in regions with insufficient samples.
Use Cases
Modeling seabed sediment distribution based on gravel, mud, and sand weight percentages
Assessing seabed complexity and habitat suitability based on sediment fractions
Planning marine infrastructure projects based on basin-scale sediment properties
Validating and updating sediment predictions based on the described interpolation method
Strengths
Spatially continuous data presented in 0.0025 decimal degree resolution raster grids
Supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy
Covers the Petrel sub-basin within the Australian continental EEZ
Limitations
Accuracy varies based on underlying data density and seabed complexity; artifacts occur from insufficient samples
Intended for basin scale; may not be appropriate for smaller scales where sample density is low
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Likely derived from seabed samples and interpolated predictions.
