Description
Geoscience Australia and the Marine National Facility collected seabed imagery and sensor data during the RV Investigator survey IN2017-V01 from January to March 2017. The dataset includes six camera tow transects on the Sabrina Coast seafloor, targeting depths between 480 and 1680 meters, with still images, video, and accompanying CTD, altimeter, and pressure sensor metadata. Imagery was color-corrected to remove blue bias, and data is stored on the NCI with a structured file hierarchy.
Use Cases
Classifying benthic fauna and substrate types based on color-corrected still images and video.
Analyzing seafloor topography and habitat structure using altimeter and depth sensor data.
Studying oceanographic conditions (temperature, salinity) in relation to observed biological communities using CTD measurements.
Mapping survey transects and camera tow locations using provided latitude and longitude coordinates.
Strengths
Data collection used specialized equipment including a Deep Tow Camera system with high-definition Canon cameras and scale-providing lasers.
Sensor suite attached to the towed body provides concurrent environmental measurements (CTD, pressure, altitude).
Imagery covers a defined depth range of 480 to 1680 meters across six transects on the Antarctic continental shelf.
Limitations
Metadata completeness is limited; column-level documentation is absent and field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data alignment issues exist, with a noted timing offset between image frames and sensor readings (CTD, altimeter, pressure).
Some data collection failed, including a USBL failure for one tow and only two images saved for another.
