IN2017_V01: Seabed Imagery and Sensor Data from Sabrina Coast, East Antarctica

Six camera tow transects collected seafloor imagery and sensor data during the RV Investigator survey IN2017-V01 from January to March 2017. The survey targeted the Sabrina Coast upper slope and outer continental shelf at depths between 480 and 1680 meters. This dataset is published with the permission of Geoscience Australia and the Marine National Facility.

Use Cases

• Classifying benthic fauna and substrate types based on color-corrected still images and HD video.
• Analyzing seafloor topography and habitat structure using data from the attached altimeter and pressure sensors.
• Studying oceanographic conditions (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen) correlated with imagery via CTD sensor data.

Strengths

• Includes six transects with both high-definition video and still images from specialized deep-tow camera systems.
• Sensor package provides concurrent CTD, altimeter, pressure, and positional data for environmental context.
• Still images were post-processed to correct for blue color bias inherent in underwater photography.

Limitations

• Data alignment issues exist; an offset between image timestamps and sensor data (CTD, altimeter, pressure) is noted and being resolved.
• Some data loss occurred: USBL positioning failed for one tow, and another tow recorded only two images.
• Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download from the metadata.csv file.
