Description
Spatially continuous data of seabed sand content expressed as a weight percentage from 0 to 100%, presented in 0.01 decimal degree resolution raster format. The dataset covers the Australian continental EEZ, including seabed surrounding Tasmania, and supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy. It was published by the Australian Ocean Data Network and last updated on June 4, 2026.
Use Cases
Modeling seabed sediment distribution based on sand content percentage.
Assessing marine habitat suitability based on sediment grain size data.
Planning offshore infrastructure projects based on seabed composition.
Calibrating regional sediment transport models based on continuous raster data.
Strengths
Provides continuous raster data at 0.01 decimal degree resolution.
Supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy.
Covers the Australian continental EEZ, including seabed surrounding Tasmania.
Limitations
Accuracy varies based on underlying data density and seabed complexity; artefacts occur from insufficient samples.
Not appropriate for local-scale use in areas with insufficient sample density to detect local variation.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Likely contains predictions interpolated from seabed samples.
Time Range
2011

Geography
Australian continental Exclusive Economic Zone, including seabed surrounding Tasmania. Excludes Macquarie Island, Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Heard and McDonald Islands, and the Australian Antarctic Territory.
Data is provided in ZIP and HTML formats; specific software for raster analysis may be required.
