Two seabed swath-mapping surveys, AUSTREA-1 and AUSTREA-2, were completed in early 2000 by the Australian Geological Survey Organisation. The surveys were commissioned by the National Oceans Office and Environment Australia to support Australia's Ocean Policy and marine protected area planning. The data covers the South-east Marine Region, including Lord Howe Island, Tasmania, South Tasman Rise, and the Central Great Australian Bight.
Use Cases
- Map seabed topography for marine protected area planning based on swath-mapping survey data
- Analyze geophysical features for regional marine plan development based on survey information
- Model seabed habitats for scientific research based on the described mapping coverage
Strengths
- Commissioned by the National Oceans Office and Environment Australia for official policy implementation
- Covers a broad geographic region including Lord Howe Island, Tasmania, South Tasman Rise, and the Central Great Australian Bight
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
