Description
Mosquito apparent densities, species, and sex were collected in Bura, Kenya, between September 2013 and November 2014. Sampling was repeated four times to cover wet, dry, irrigation, and fallow seasons using CDC light traps. The data were analyzed by researchers from icipe, ILRI, and KEMRI to assess the impact of land use change on mosquito habitats and Rift Valley fever vectors.
Use Cases
Analyze mosquito apparent density fluctuations between irrigated and non-irrigated areas across four seasonal periods.
Model species and sex composition shifts in response to land use change from pastoral rangeland to crop land.
Identify mosquito species associated with Rift Valley fever virus transmission relative to village and collection date.
Assess habitat suitability for mosquito development using data sorted by village, collection date, and trap method.
Strengths
Data collection spanned over a year from September 2013 to November 2014.
Sampling was strategically repeated four times to capture wet, dry, irrigation, and fallow seasons.
Mosquitoes were meticulously sorted by species, sex, village, and collection date at a KEMRI laboratory.
Study involved experienced researchers from icipe, ILRI, and KEMRI as part of the DDDAC consortium.
Limitations
The dataset is temporally limited to a specific 14-month period and geographically focused on Bura, Tana River County.
Sample data and specific row/column counts are unavailable, limiting assessment of dataset scale and structure.
Data collection method (CDC light traps) may not capture all mosquito species or population dynamics equally.
