Description
1980-2010 seasonal climatologies of temperature, salinity, sigma-t, and elevation for the Canadian Pacific Exclusive Economic Zone were computed from historical CTD, bottle, XBT, and Argo data. Averages were calculated as medians across sixty-five subregions and up to fifty-two vertical levels, resulting in high-resolution raster layers at 1/300 degree. The dataset was produced by Fisheries and Oceans Canada from quality-controlled archives.
Use Cases
Model ocean temperature and salinity seasonal cycles across sixty-five subregions and fifty-two vertical levels.
Analyze spatial patterns of sigma-t (density) to study water mass distribution in the Northeast Pacific Ocean.
Use high-resolution (1/300 degree) elevation raster layers for bathymetric studies within the Canadian Pacific EEZ.
Compare seasonal climatological averages (spring, summer, fall, winter) for temperature and salinity derived from median calculations.
Strengths
Covers a 31-year time range (1980-2010) providing a long-term climatological baseline.
High spatial resolution of 1/300 degree for raster layers of temperature, salinity, sigma-t, and elevation.
Data synthesized from multiple authoritative sources including NOAA, MEDS, and Institute of Ocean Sciences archives.
Analysis spans sixty-five subregions and up to fifty-two vertical levels from surface to 5000m depth.
Limitations
Uncertainties are introduced due to spatial interpolation of observational data over varying distances.
Data is presented as raster layers in PDF/HTML formats, not a structured tabular format, limiting direct computational analysis.
The temporal coverage ends in 2010, making the dataset over a decade old and potentially not reflecting recent oceanographic changes.
Provenance
Source
Fisheries and Oceans Canada, synthesized from NOAA, Marine Environmental Data Service (MEDS), and Institute of Ocean Sciences archives.
Collection Method
Calculated from historical conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD), bottle, expendable bathy-thermograph (XBT), and Argo data. Seasonal averages computed as medians of yearly values after smoothing and interpolation.
Time Range
1980 to 2010
Freshness
Last updated metadata indicates 2026-03-24, but the underlying data coverage ends in 2010.
Geography
Canadian Pacific Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), a subset of the Northeast Pacific Ocean.
Primary data formats are PDF and HTML, not machine-readable tabular formats like CSV; the Canada Open Government Licence applies.
