Description
A new stratigraphic interpretation of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks from Valanginian to Campanian age, encountered in petroleum exploration wells, stratigraphic holes, and water bores along the southern Australian coast. The record, presented by Geoscience Australia, correlates onshore and offshore sections using biostratigraphic and seismic data, identifying potential source rocks. The succession reaches a maximum thickness of more than 357 meters in the Madura 1 well.
Use Cases
Modeling basin evolution based on the described sequence stratigraphic framework and supersequences (Bronze Whaler, Blue Whale-White Pointer, Tiger, Hammerhead).
Assessing hydrocarbon source rock potential based on identified organic-rich non-marine and marine facies.
Correlating depositional environments from non-marine to deltaic complexes using the interpreted well and seismic data.
Studying Cretaceous paleoenvironments and anoxic conditions near the northern margin of the Bight Basin.
Strengths
Maximum thickness of more than 357 meters documented in the Madura 1 well.
Correlates data from multiple sources: petroleum wells, stratigraphic holes, water bores, and seismic data.
Identifies specific organic-rich facies of Early and Late Cretaceous age as potential source rocks.
Interprets depositional environment evolution from Valanginian to Campanian.
Limitations
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data is presented in PDF and HTML formats, which may require extraction for computational analysis.
