Description
Outer reef Kailua Bay wave height time series data were collected by the University of Hawaii, Maui, using bottom-mounted pressure sensors. The dataset records significant wave height and other parameters at three progressively deeper sites off Oahu, Hawaii. Measurements were taken from September 28, 2000, to October 6, 2000, in the Coastal Waters of Hawaii and Northeast Pacific Ocean.
Use Cases
Analyzing wave energy attenuation across a reef gradient based on sensor depth.
Calibrating or validating numerical wave models for Hawaiian coastal waters.
Studying short-term wave climate variability during the September-October 2000 period.
Assessing the performance of pressure gauge instruments for wave measurement.
Strengths
Provides a focused, high-temporal-resolution record over a 9-day period.
Captures wave data across a depth gradient at three distinct sensor locations.
Submitted by a known academic institution, the University of Hawaii, Maui.
Limitations
Column names and specific parameters beyond 'significant wave height' are unknown.
Metadata completeness is low, with no explicit license, row count, or file format information.
The dataset's temporal scope is limited to a single week in late 2000.
Provenance
Source
University of Hawaii, Maui; submitted to NOAA NCEI.
Collection Method
Data were collected using pressure gauges at fixed, bottom-mounted platforms.
Time Range
September 28, 2000, to October 6, 2000
Freshness
Metadata was last updated on March 6, 2026, though the underlying data is from 2000.
Geography
Outer Reef in Kailua Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, in the Coastal Waters of Hawaii and Northeast Pacific Ocean.
The dataset is hosted on multiple platforms (NASA Earthdata and Data.gov) with identical descriptions but potentially different access mechanisms.
