Description
SMEX04 Meteorological Network Data provides in situ measurements from the Soil Moisture Experiment 2004 conducted in Arizona. Columns suggest it contains atmospheric pressure, solar radiation, air temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, soil moisture, and soil temperature. Documentation for this dataset was provided solely by the Principal Investigator(s) and was not further developed, thoroughly reviewed, or edited by NSIDC.
Use Cases
Validating satellite-derived soil moisture estimates based on in situ soil moisture measurements.
Modeling land-atmosphere energy fluxes based on net radiation and surface temperature data.
Analyzing local meteorological conditions for agricultural water management based on humidity and temperature.
Studying wind patterns and their relationship to surface evaporation based on wind speed and direction data.
Strengths
Data originates from a controlled scientific field experiment (SMEX04).
The dataset is hosted by a major space agency (NASA).
It is available on multiple data platforms, indicating recognized utility.
Limitations
Documentation is noted as being provided solely by the Principal Investigator(s) and not reviewed by NSIDC, suggesting potential support gaps.
Key metadata such as row count, file size, and specific column names are missing from all provided sources.
There is a conflict in last updated dates: one source shows 2004-09-30, while others show 2026-04-09, indicating potential metadata errors.
