Stratigraphical measurements to a depth of 2-3m were made along a glaciological traverse route from 68.35.S, 113.19E to 69.00S, 130.48E at approximately 2000m elevation in Wilkes Land, Eastern Antarctica. Observations of the snow surface and meteorological conditions began on 29 August and continued until 28 December whilst the stratigraphical measurements were made between 28 September and 20 November 1982. The dataset includes fields such as Year, Months, Mean Temperature, Maximum Temperature, Minimum Temperature, Mean Station Level Pressure, Mean Wind Speed, Maximum Wind Gust, Days Strong Wind, Days Gale Wind, Mark, Acc metres snow, and Period 1980-81 and 1981.
Use Cases
- Analyze snow crust and glaze formation processes based on stratigraphical measurements and meteorological data.
- Study the impact of erosional processes and sastrugi on annual layer interpretation based on observations.
- Investigate temperature gradients and deep-hoar formation within snow layers based on inferred occurrences.
- Compare winter and summer snow surface hardness based on seasonal observations.
- Model katabatic wind influence on snow cover development based on traverse location data.
Strengths
- Observations span a specific traverse route from 68.35.S, 113.19E to 69.00S, 130.48E at approximately 2000m elevation.
- Data collection occurred over a defined period from 29 August to 28 December 1982, with stratigraphical measurements between 28 September and 20 November.
- Includes detailed meteorological fields such as Mean Temperature, Maximum Temperature, Minimum Temperature, Mean Station Level Pressure, and wind metrics.
Limitations
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
