Description
September and October 2022 soil data from eight UK agricultural sites provides baseline measurements before perennial biomass crop planting. The dataset includes soil characteristics such as pH, moisture, stone content, bulk density, organic matter, texture, and total carbon and nitrogen content. Samples were processed at UKCEH laboratories from September 2022 to August 2023, funded by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero.
Use Cases
Analyze correlations between soil pH, organic matter content, and total carbon content across eight agricultural sites.
Model soil moisture and bulk density relationships to inform irrigation and land management for perennial biomass crops.
Investigate soil texture classification and stone content to assess site suitability for specific crop types.
Use Thermo-Gravimetric Analyses (TGA) data from the site with atypically high total carbon for specialized carbon sequestration studies.
Strengths
Data covers eight distinct agricultural sites across the UK, providing geographic variety.
Includes a range of measured soil characteristics: pH, moisture, stone content, bulk density, organic matter, texture, and total carbon and nitrogen.
Samples were collected and processed using standardized methods (Split tube sampler, UKCEH laboratories) over a defined period from September 2022 to August 2023.
Limitations
Dataset is limited to a single sampling period (September-October 2022), lacking temporal depth or seasonal variation.
Sample size is confined to eight sites, which may not represent the full diversity of UK agricultural soils.
Thermo-Gravimetric Analyses (TGA) was performed at only one site, limiting the application of this specific analysis.
Provenance

Environmental Information Data Centre
Collection Method
Soil samples collected using a Split tube sampler and processed at UKCEH laboratories.
Time Range
Samples collected in September and October 2022; processed from September 2022 to August 2023.
Freshness
Data reflects conditions from 2022, with metadata last updated in March 2026.
Geography
Eight agricultural sites across the United Kingdom.
Data is provided in a ZIP file format; specific internal file structures and formats are unknown. The dataset was created to provide baseline data before planting perennial biomass crops, which defines its intended context.
