Description
Sounder SIPS provides the AQUA AIRS IR-only Level 2 CLIMCAPS Cloud Cleared Radiances dataset. It contains calibrated, geolocated infrared radiances from the AIRS grating spectrometer aboard the EOS Aqua satellite, representing what would be observed under clear skies. The dataset includes retrieved profiles of temperature, water vapor, ozone, carbon monoxide, and methane, with a horizontal resolution of 50 km.
Use Cases
Analyzing cloud-cleared infrared radiances for atmospheric radiative transfer studies.
Studying vertical profiles of temperature and moisture for weather and climate models.
Monitoring trace gas concentrations like carbon monoxide and methane for pollution and climate change research.
Correcting a known bias in the derived carbon monoxide mass mixing ratio product at ~500 hPa.
Strengths
Provides high spectral resolution data from a grating spectrometer with R = 1200.
Offers detailed vertical profiling with temperature at 100 levels between 1100 mb and 0.1 mb.
Has a defined spatial resolution of 50 km and a temporal structure of 240 granules per day.
Limitations
A significant, documented bias exists in the derived variable 'co_mmr_midtrop' due to a molecular weight conversion error.
Metadata for row count, column names, and specific file size is unavailable across all sources.
License information is inconsistently reported as 'other-license-specified' or null.

GES_DISC
Collection Method
Data retrieved from the AIRS instrument on the EOS Aqua satellite and processed by the CLIMCAPS algorithm.

Geography
Global coverage from a polar-orbiting satellite with an approximate 16-day orbit repeat cycle.
The derived product 'co_mmr_midtrop' has a significant bias; users must multiply it by 28.01/44.01 to correct or derive a new profile from Level 2 column density values. Contact [email protected] for questions.
