Description
From October 2008 to February 2009, Geoscience Australia conducted two major marine surveys for the Southwest Margin Project. The work acquired 7,300 km of 2D seismic data, 230,000 km² of multibeam bathymetry, and 25,000 line km each of gravity, magnetic, and sub-bottom profiler data, alongside 190 geological samples. The project also reprocessed 11,700 line km of industry seismic data from the offshore Northern Perth Basin.
Use Cases
Modeling subsurface geology and potential hydrocarbon reservoirs based on the 2D seismic reflection data.
Analyzing seafloor morphology and bathymetric features based on the multibeam swath bathymetry coverage.
Investigating regional crustal structure and magnetic anomalies based on the acquired gravity and magnetic data.
Correlating seismic stratigraphy with well data based on the reprocessed industry seismic lines.
Studying seabed composition and geology based on the collected rock samples from dredge sites.
Strengths
Covers a large spatial area including the Mentelle, North Perth, Southern Carnarvon Basins, and Wallaby Plateau.
Integrates multiple data types: seismic, bathymetry, gravity, magnetics, sub-bottom profiler, and physical samples.
Includes 11,700 line km of reprocessed industry seismic data to provide ties to existing wells.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data is from a specific 2008-2009 campaign; freshness should be verified for contemporary applications.
