Description
Ten villages in Mozambique's Gurue district were selected along a land scarcity gradient from abundant to constrained land. Interviews and focus group discussions with small-scale producers, commercial managers, traders, and officials were conducted between July and December 2015. The dataset contains transcripts from these discussions on soya production.
Use Cases
Analyze interview transcripts to compare soya production challenges across villages on the land scarcity gradient.
Identify themes in discussions with formal and informal traders to map market access issues.
Contrast perspectives from small-scale producers and commercial operation managers on agricultural expansion drivers.
Strengths
Data collection targeted ten villages with similar infrastructure, soils, rainfall, and vegetation, allowing for controlled comparison.
Interviews captured perspectives from multiple stakeholder groups, including producers, traders, and NGO technicians.
Research was conducted under the funded Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA) programme.
Limitations
Dataset consists of qualitative interview transcripts, requiring manual coding or NLP for quantitative analysis.
Sample is geographically limited to one district in central Mozambique, limiting generalizability.
Data is from 2015 and may not reflect current agricultural or market conditions.
