Description
Seven laboratory experiments (HEC1, HEC2, HEC3, XG1, XG2, W1, W2) conducted at the University of Liverpool, described in a 2025 paper. The data consist of spatial and temporal measurements from analogue models of fluid-driven fractures, comparing shear-thinning and Newtonian fluids. Raw data and Matlab processing scripts are provided by the British Geological Survey.
Use Cases
Compare fracture propagation dynamics based on shear-thinning versus Newtonian fluid properties
Validate numerical models of dyke emplacement using the provided spatial and temporal datasets
Analyze internal flow dynamics in analogue experiments using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) data
Study the relationship between fluid injection and dyke thickness evolution in seeded gelatine experiments
Strengths
Includes data from 7 distinct, named experiments allowing for controlled comparisons
Provides raw data alongside the specific Matlab scripts used for processing and plotting
Covers two fluid rheology types: shear-thinning (HEC, XG) and Newtonian (water)
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Row count and file size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
Data may reflect experimental bias inherent to the specific small-scale laboratory setup
