Description
820 solar and late-type stars from nearby open clusters and the field have photometric parameters, rotation periods, and X-ray luminosities. The sample was used to study the rotation-activity relationship, revealing a power law slope of -2.70 in the unsaturated regime, inconsistent with the canonical -2 slope. NASA HEASARC created this catalog in March 2012 based on CDS data, removing 4 near-duplicate entries.
Use Cases
Modeling the relationship between stellar rotation and X-ray luminosity based on the derived power law slope.
Studying stellar dynamo theory and differential rotation using the sample's rotation periods and activity indicators.
Identifying regimes of coronal emission (saturated, super-saturated, unsaturated) using empirical thresholds.
Analyzing the behavior of late F-type stars which bypass the saturated emission regime.
Strengths
Contains a curated sample of 820 stars with duplicate entries removed.
Includes derived stellar parameters used in a published astrophysical study.
Data supports a specific, statistically significant finding (5 sigma confidence on power law slope).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown beyond the initial 820, which may limit suitability assessment.
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Provenance
Source
NASA HEASARC, based on CDS Catalog J/ApJ/743/48.
Collection Method
Compiled from photometric and derived parameters for a sample of stars.
