Description
A regional-scale map of Plant Community Types (PCTs) for the Upper Hunter area of New South Wales, Australia. The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage produced this seamless map using aerial imagery, site surveys, and environmental data. It was superseded by a newer statewide map on June 24, 2022, and the web service will be archived after March 31, 2025.
Use Cases
Assessing native vegetation composition based on mapped Plant Community Types (PCTs).
Analyzing vegetation distribution relative to climatic and topographic rule-based envelopes.
Comparing vegetation communities using the 312 mapped PCTs versus the previous 185 map units.
Integrating pre-existing vegetation maps (e.g., VIS1849, VIS3863) for regional analysis.
Strengths
Incorporates 463 additional vegetation plots compared to prior mapping efforts.
Uses high-resolution 50cm ADS-40 aerial imagery for photo interpretation and line work.
Maps 312 distinct vegetation communities as PCTs, an increase from 185 map units in the previous version.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
The dataset is superseded and scheduled for archival, indicating it is not the current authoritative version.
