A microbial bioprocess achieved up to 6.93 grams per liter of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) from glycerol feedstock. Dragan Miscevic from the University of Waterloo engineered Escherichia coli strains using CRISPRi and metabolic strategies to enhance production. This study demonstrates one of the most effective bio-based production methods for this valuable amino acid.
