Esso Bass No. 1 Well was drilled in 1965 to a depth of 7717 feet in the Bass Basin, about 88 miles east of King Island. The well was designed to test the petroleum potential of a postulated reef-type anomaly in the Miocene section and gain stratigraphic information on Tertiary and Mesozoic sediments. A full programme of logging and coring was undertaken by Esso Exploration Australia Inc.
