Description
Mount Salt No. 1 Well was drilled in the Otway Basin, South Australia, to a depth of 10,044 feet between May and September 1962. The well was drilled by Reading and Bates (Australia) Pty Ltd for Oil Development No Liability to test Cretaceous sediments for petroleum potential. A full program of logging, testing, and coring was undertaken, recording traces of crude oil and a gas show.
Use Cases
Analyze stratigraphic sequences based on descriptions of Oligocene, Eocene-Palaeocene, and Upper Cretaceous sediments.
Evaluate petroleum potential based on recorded traces of crude oil and gas shows.
Correlate geological formations like the Paaratte Formation or Waarre Formation using the well's logged intervals.
Study subsidized exploration projects under the Petroleum Search Subsidy Act 1959-1961.
Model subsurface structures based on photogeology and structure drilling program results mentioned.
Strengths
Detailed operational timeline: drilling commenced on 9th May, 1962 and was completed on 21st September, 1962.
Specific depth measurements: total depth of 10,044 feet, with intervals like 9830 to 9848 feet for gas shows.
Comprehensive data collection program: logging, testing, and coring was undertaken.
Clear geographic location: approximately twelve miles south-west of Mount Gambier in the Otway Basin.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic/temporal bias inherent to a single, historical well report.
