Inherent Optical Properties (IOPs) describe how seawater absorbs and scatters light independent of viewing conditions. The Suomi-NPP VIIRS Level-3 data provides global mapped IOPs retrieved from spectral Remote Sensing Reflectance using the Generalized IOP model framework. These products support water-type classification, clarity assessment, and biogeochemical studies.
Use Cases
- Water-type classification based on total absorption and backscattering coefficients
- Water-clarity assessment based on particulate backscattering coefficient
- Biogeochemical studies based on phytoplankton absorption coefficient
- Forward/adjoint radiative-transfer applications based on retrieved inherent optical properties
- Cross-sensor comparisons based on IOPs derived from spectral Remote Sensing Reflectance
Strengths
- Provides per-pixel inherent optical properties, which are more fundamental than apparent optical properties
- Includes uncertainty estimates for key variables like aph_unc_443 and bbp_unc_443
- Supports multiple applications including classification, assessment, and radiative-transfer modeling
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
- Row count and file size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
- Data may reflect geographic or sensor bias inherent to NASA Earthdata sources
